NUTRITIONAL LABELING

 

Anvisa published on 10/9/2020 the RDC 429/20 that provides for the nutritional labeling of packaged foods and the IN 75/20 that established the technical requirements for declaring the nutrition labeling on packaged foods.
The regulations apply to packaged foods in the absence of consumers, including drinks, ingredients, food additives and technology aids, including those intended exclusively for industrial processing or food services.
In addition to significant changes in the table of nutritional information and nutritional claims, the standard innovates by adopting frontal nutrition labeling, through the magnifying glass symbol that will inform the high content of added sugars, saturated fats and sodium in foods.
Considered the biggest innovation of the standard, frontal nutrition labeling should clarify to the consumer, in a clear and simple way, about the high content of nutrients that are relevant to health.
To this end, a magnifying glass design was developed to identify the high content of three nutrients: added sugars, saturated fats and sodium. The symbol must be applied to the main label panel, at the top, following specific formatting rules.

The Nutritional Information Table will only have black characters on a white background and should be close to the list of ingredients. The declaration of total and added sugars, nutrients of relevance to health, as well as the declaration of energy and nutrients per 100 g or 100 ml of food will be mandatory, to allow comparisons. The number of portions contained in the package was also included as mandatory information.

The rules for declaring nutrition claims on labeling have been changed mainly in order to avoid contradictions with frontal nutrition labeling.
The purpose of this standard is not to impose any choice. It is to enable understanding, respecting the freedom of choice of all people living in our territory.
